What a Third-Party Test Costs and Takes: Price Drivers, Bands and Turnaround in 2026

Why an identity check is cheap and a full panel is not, what drives the price and the wait, what laboratories in this market list as of September 2026, and how to decide what is proportionate to an order.

An identity check with chromatographic purity on one sample, from a laboratory serving this market, is typically priced in the low hundreds of US dollars and takes from a few working days to around two weeks from receipt. Each additional test — endotoxin, water, net peptide content — adds its own price, often comparable to the first test again, so a full panel commonly runs to several times the cost of an identity check. Rush fees shorten the wait; accredited work with stated uncertainty usually lengthens it and costs more.

Those are bands, not quotes. Prices move quickly in this market and a stale figure misleads more than no figure at all. The figures later on this page are each laboratory's own listing as read on 15 September 2026, given to show the shape of the market rather than to fix a price. What drives the price

Four things set the figure on a quote. The first is the method: an HPLC purity run and an LC-MS identity check are routine, instrument-efficient and often run together, while amino acid analysis, Karl Fischer titration and endotoxin testing each need their own preparation and instrument time. The second is sample preparation, which for some tests — hydrolysis before amino acid analysis, for instance — takes longer than the measurement. The third is how controlled the work is: a validated method, run with system suitability checks and reference standards, and reported with measurement uncertainty, costs more to run than a screening method [1] [2]. The fourth is turnaround, which laboratories price explicitly through rush fees.

Why a full panel costs several times an identity check

Each added test is a separate analysis with its own controls, not an extra line on the same run. Endotoxin testing under USP <85> requires positive and negative controls and a demonstration that the sample does not interfere with the reaction [3]. Water by Karl Fischer under USP <921> is a separate titration with its own standardisation [4]. Content determination is the most demanding: amino acid analysis, the reference method for content, involves hydrolysing the peptide and quantifying the released amino acids against standards, which is slow and exacting work. A buyer who orders the full panel is buying four or five analyses, and the invoice reflects it.

What laboratories list, as of September 2026

These are each laboratory's own published figures, read on its website on 15 September 2026. They are not a comparison, a ranking or a recommendation, and they will change. ACS Laboratory lists HPLC purity testing 'from $150 per sample' and a standard turnaround of 9–11 business days from receipt; it states ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, which is covered, with the scope caveat, in the laboratory-selection article in this cluster [5]. Chromate lists endotoxin by kinetic chromogenic LAL at $240, and notes that at least one container is needed for HPLC with additional containers for microbiology [6]. Freedom Diagnostics states average results in 2–4 days, with HPLC and LC-MS on every certificate, and does not list prices on its home page [7]. Janoshik's enquiry form offers both a rush fee for faster results and group testing [8].

Read those together and the bands above hold: a purity result starting in the low hundreds, endotoxin adding a similar sum, turnaround from days to a fortnight. Where a laboratory does not publish a price, ask for a written quote naming each test, its method, the sample requirement and the turnaround from receipt.

Batch testing economics and when pooling makes sense

Some laboratories accept group testing, where several buyers share the cost of one analysis [8]. The arithmetic is attractive; the evidence is narrower than it looks. A group test produces one result on one container, and it covers the other participants only if they hold the same lot, as shown by matching lot strings on their labels. It also reintroduces the question independent testing is meant to remove: someone in the group chose which container went. Pooling makes sense for buyers of a single, verified lot who agree in advance who sends the container, how it is chosen, and how the report is shared. It does not make sense across lots, however similar the labels.

Rush fees and what they buy

A rush fee moves your sample up the queue; it does not shorten the analysis itself or the transit to the laboratory. Before paying one, add the shipping time to the standard turnaround and ask whether the difference actually changes a decision. It sometimes does — a large order awaiting release, a dated project — and often does not. Accredited laboratories may be less able to expedite, because their methods include checks that cannot be skipped [1]; that is part of what the system suitability and reference standard work behind a defensible result costs in time.

What 'turnaround' actually measures

A laboratory's stated turnaround almost always runs from receipt of the sample, not from the day you post it, and it is usually counted in working days. The time you actually wait is the sum of four intervals: transit to the laboratory, the intake queue while the package is logged and checked against the submission form, the analysis itself, and review and release of the report. ISO/IEC 17025 requires the report to carry both the date of receipt and the dates of analysis [1], so after the event you can see where the time went. Before ordering, ask which of those intervals the quoted figure covers and whether it includes weekends or public holidays.

Two things lengthen turnaround more than buyers expect. A submission form that does not match the package, or a missing form, can hold a sample at intake until the laboratory hears back. And tests run in batches — endotoxin and amino acid analysis in particular — may wait for the next scheduled run rather than start on arrival. A clean submission, matched to the written quote, is the cheapest way to shorten the wait.

What a written quote should contain

A quote is worth comparing only if it is complete. Ask for each of the following in writing, and keep the reply with the eventual report; if a laboratory cannot supply them, that is information about the report you would receive [1] [2].

  • Each test by name, with the method and, for chromatography, the detection wavelength.
  • The amount of material and the number of containers each test needs, and whether any must be unopened.
  • Turnaround from receipt, in working days, and the price and availability of any rush option.
  • Whether measurement uncertainty will be reported, and whether the chromatogram is included.
  • Whether the methods quoted fall within the laboratory's accreditation scope, or a plain statement that they do not.
  • How a third party can confirm the report with the laboratory once it is issued.

Deciding what is proportionate

The useful comparison is not test cost against order value alone, but test cost against what a wrong answer would cost you: repeated experiments, a retracted figure, weeks lost to material that was not what the label said. Measured that way, an identity check is almost always proportionate on a first order from a new source, and a full panel is proportionate when the work is quantitative or cell-based. For a repeat lot from a supplier whose certificates your own earlier results have corroborated, reading the batch-matched certificate carefully may be enough [1].

  1. Write down the question you need answered, and pick only the tests that answer it.
  2. Get written quotes from two laboratories, each naming method, sample requirement and turnaround [1].
  3. Add transit time to each turnaround before deciding whether a rush fee is worth it.
  4. Price the full panel only if the work is quantitative or cell-based [3] [4].
  5. Record the quote, the date and the laboratory's stated accreditation with the eventual result.
